Our Backyard Flock
There are a LOT of differences in the childhood of my children than mine. I grew up living in the same place all of my childhood. My children have lived all over the state. I was in public school and my children have always been homeschooled. I rarely attended church and my children have grown up serving in fulltime ministry alongside us. But one of the things my children have enjoyed that I didn't as a child are these sweet, sweet girls (and one handsome guy) that we just love to pieces!
Our chickens!!!
Yesterday my kiddos had them out in the yard playing so I had to take some photos of them!
I thought today would be a fun day to share!
We started with chickens back in our home in Staley (near Greensboro NC) during covid.
We knew shutdown was coming. My husband and I had breakfast one day at the local Ihop then went to visit tractor supply. We saw them and immediately thought this would be a good stay at home project.
We raised them for the whole three years we were there. At one point the entire flock had a disease that was incurable, so we had to cull the entire flock. We cried buckets. We LOVED our chickens.
After some time with the ground being allowed to rest, we started over and before we moved we had 33 chickens!
When we came here we rehomed them all, knowing we needed some time to get everything ready.
this is our silkie, Harleen, isn't she pretty!!!
When we moved here one of our sweet friends built us a chicken coop, and over the years we
have lost a few, but now we have two girls that are the longest that we have had chickens. Peaches (the buff orpington in the photos above) and Barbra (she's an Easter Egger) are our oldest girls!
We have some new girls who are still 'babies'. They were born in June. They are all grown up but still
aren't laying yet. But they are beautiful! And they aren't molting like the older girls!
Tansy, our Americauna
Felicity, a barred rock
Our roo is Gerby, he's a sweet boy!
Peaches is our sweet girl! She's been around for years!
I'm sharing today with Talking about it Tuesday at Slices of Life! and Tuesdays with a Twist at Gods Growing Garden. Join the fun!
I loved reading about all the differences between your childhood and your kids. I grew up on a farm and we had chickens. We loved them too. My kids never had chickens, but there are lots of people around us who do.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely flock; lots of our homeschooling friends raise chickens too (and quite a few family members as well for that matter) but I've never given it any thought.
